Is Bub Means A Fit For The Deebo Samuel Role In The Kubiak Offense? (1 Viewer)

Maann we really fell off with WRs towards of the end of Brees career. Thinking of guys like TQS, Brandon Coleman, Juwan Johnson (whom we had to move to TE) were all underwhelming. And there are plenty of other names whom I can't even think of at this moment.

Other than Olave, it's going to be interesting to see who our starters are and what they are asked to do since we're transitioning to a run-first team. Blocking is going to be important, so we have to see how they hold up in that department.

It's the biggest regret of the Brees era.

We spent so much time trying to fix the defense while, in my opinion, we should have been making efforts to accentuate our strength. Obviously getting the defense right was important, but we missed out on an opportunity to really have an unstoppable offense.

You thought our offense was unstoppable then; just imagine if we went and got Brees a guy like Randy Moss (or whoever) or emphasized drafting offensive skill position players early. For example, what if in 2013, instead of drafting Kenny Vaccaro to help fix the defense, we instead get Drew a DeAndre Hopkins?

Brees was outstanding at making lesser known players play above their capabilities, just imagine what he could have done with actual studs all over.

We wouldn't have even needed defense; no one would have been able to outscore us, ever. lol

I like the pick but Bub has to make the team first.....folks already comparing him to 12 (Quietstorm) need to pump the brakes a bit IMO....

Man, if Means can just BLOCK as a WR like he says he can, he makes da team as our next TQS! 😂🤣😂

Of his RAS scores, there were THREE that caught my eye:

His arm length: 33 in

Hand size : 10 in!

Gotta love those numbers from a WR!

But I REALLY like his 19 reps on da bench! That number alone is pretty damned good for any WR. But it’s evn more impressive when you have 33in arms!

Dude is STRONG!!! 💪

This isn't directed at you, but I think too much gets made of RAS scores. They're a fun guide, but at the end of the day it has limited bearing on how well a person can play FOOTBALL.

There's some things that can't be measured or answered quantifiably...does Bub have that DAWG in him like Deebo does? Does he have the heart and will power to go snatch that thing out of the air no matter what's coming for him? Does he seek contact and look to run guys over when given the opportunity? Can he master the playbook to the point where everything is coming second nature and he's playing without thinking too much so that he is always in the exact right moment at the exact right second? If the play breaks down, does he have that mental/natural ability to find the correct spot to improvise? Can he change directions in the blink of an eye while wearing football gear and cleats and holding a football, etc.

Only time will tell, but those are ultimately the things that make Deebo, Deebo...not how well he exercises in speedos or what size a tape measure says his hands are.

I view combine drills and measurements more as a competency test than a comparison tool.

Thing is, that's what we were actually doing, until Drew's arm strength plummeted and egos collided, we could have had something nice built...

Healthy Drew with Cooks, Thomas, Smith, Kamara, and Mark Ingram would have been problems. The biggest hole we had was at TE after Watson. But we know how everything played out.

Agreed. I almost put a “What if we just dealt with Cooks’ attitude for a bit” tangent in there.

He was really the absolute perfect compliment to MT.

Sure there would likely be no Ramczyk, but I think we could have found adequate help there elsewhere if it came to it.

This was the exact comp I had in mind while watching him. One of the most underrated WRs of our time.

A first ballot Hall of Very Good player.
So underrated. He was overshadowed by Larry Fitz in Arizona but he still made three Pro Bowls. I don't know about his actual tested numbers but he's one of the strongest WRs I have ever seen. His play strength was awesome. His play speed wasn't too shabby either.

Some guys test well and other guys just have it on the field. Country strong.

4.71 in the 40, and you’re right…not very many guys were catching him from behind.

Some guys just play faster than others with pads on and/or have quickness, change of direction skills, great acceleration, etc. that makes up for being top speed “slow.”

We had a decent group but then we started trading everyone away. I agree that Hopkins would have been perfect and we probably wouldn't have drafted Cooks a year later.

Will be interesting to see, he’s more of a big deep threat than a RAC specialist.

Different player. The giveaway is the short shuttle time. Elite for Deebo, poor for Bub. That time measures lateral quickness and change of direction. That's a huge part of what makes Deebo special.

They have similarities in that they both come in to the league with yard after catch ability, and both have a need to work on their route running. That's where the similarities largely end.
Bub is fast in a str8 line but not agile. You see 6’0 215 and think RAC but that’s so not his game. He’s got huge hands though and I trust him in traffic. But not someone I’d give end arounds or feed on quick screens. He’s now making guys miss or shrugging arm tackles

I really wouldn't put so much emphasis on one drill with 2 players separated by 3 tenths of a second. Especially with Bub Means skill set. Jerry Jeudy's shuttle time was 4.53, which is worse than Means.

Don't disagree, but I would say the quickness drills are more important than 40 times.....Also considering Jeudy was a 1st round pick, he has underperformed....quickness, lateral movement, fluidity is more important than straight line speed....

He is a similar athlete to Kirk Merritt. Bigger upper body, Skinny Legs. Similiar as a very Linear straight line athlete. Change of direction/agilty and twitch very pedestrian by NFL standards. Poor acceleration but he does have good build up speed. And he has a developed a few crafty moves to beat press. On shot plays and go routes its gonna take a 4.5 guy all hes got to run with him. Hands are decent and catches through contact adequately. Hes nothing special with YAC/ball in his hands. He can compete as a gunner on ST. If hes on ur roster hes gonna be on ur ST coverage unit. Hes a guy that might can stick in the league but he very much looks like a 5th round pick to me
