METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints’ experimental usage of Taysom Hill at virtually every offensive skill position — and even on special teams — has been so unconventional that he wondered whether his ubiquity might be reined in under a new offensive coordinator.

Klint Kubiak — whose hiring this offseason represented a definitive break from the Sean Payton offense that remained in place for two years after Payton left New Orleans — wasn’t about to let Hill’s incertitude fester.

The new coordinator traveled to Utah to visit Hill and to lay out his vision for the former BYU quarterback.

The pair had “a great, frank conversation,” during which Kubiak “mapped out how he envisioned me being used,” Hill said. “It was him seeing value in what I do and what I can do in this offense and he wanted to be clear about that. It was all really positive.”

Those talks helped motivate the 33-year-old Hill to attend all the voluntary offseason practices that were held during the past three weeks and ended Thursday. By showing up, Hill received opportunities to get comfortable with the various ways he could get the ball — or sometimes serve as a blocker — in advance of next week’s mandatory minicamp.

Good for Mike Nolan. The former New Orleans Saints linebackers coach has been selected as the United Football League’s first coach of the year for his efforts leading the Michigan Panthers, who have outscored their opponents 228-189.

Nolan improved the Panthers’ record from 4-6 in 2023 (when they were part of the USFL, competitors to the XFL) to 7-3 this season (after the spring leagues merged to form the UFL). His Panthers team will now compete with the Birmingham Stallions, with the winner advancing the UFL Championship game in St. Louis.

Since leaving the Saints back in 2020, Nolan...

Dennis Allen ranked 32nd among NFL's 32 head coaches

Yikes. Dennis Allen has a lot to prove in 2024, but some observers (and some New Orleans Saints fans) are already prepared for the coach to go. Touchdown Wire’s Jarrett Bailey ranked Allen 32nd among the NFL’s 32 head coaches, arguing that while new hires are unknown quantities, we’ve seen enough to know Allen isn’t the right man for the job.

Here’s why Bailey ranked Allen last among his peers:

It’s tough to argue with that evaluation. The Saints have given Allen everything he’s asked for — his own play caller and position coaches, his $150 million quarterback, and his own draft picks...

Realistic expectations for the Saints 2024 offense

The New Orleans Saints are going to have a brand-new offensive scheme in 2024. After 15 seasons of Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator, the Saints have made a change, hiring former San Fransisco 49ers Passing Game Coordinator, Klint Kubiak, as their newest OC.

Kubiak has a long history with the game of football. His father Gary was a Super Bowl winning Head Coach, so he grew up around the game. After playing safety at Colorado State, Klint took a job at Texas A&M as the offensive quality control coach and graduate assistant. From there, he moved to his first NFL job with the...

How the wide receiver market will effect the Saints and Chris Olave

This week, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson signed a contract extension and became the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history. The final terms of the contract are a four-year deal worth $140 million dollars. A contract like this has the power to reset what the league believes wide receivers are worth. For the New Orleans Saints, a contract worth the amount Justin Jefferson received could be concerning. Chris Olave will be a free agent in 2027, which is far in the future, but the Saints will want to secure their number-one wide receiver on a long-term deal, but it won’t be easy...

Thirteen former New Orleans Saints were listed on the 2025 College Football Hall of Fame ballot and Saints Hall of Famer Wayne Martin was one of the players listed.

Martin was a defensive end for the University of Arkansas for four years and was a significant part of their history, helping them win the Southwest conference in 1988. He has the most sacks in school history, with 25.5. Martin also ranks fourth all-time is tackles for loss, with 37.

1988 was the best season of his college career by far. Not only was he an SWC champion, but was also a consensus all-American, first team...

Saints pick their quarterback of the future in this 2025 mock draft

Step aside, Derek Carr (plus Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler). This 2025 NFL mock draft has the New Orleans Saints spending a first-round pick on a new quarterback: Miami Hurricanes senior transfer Cameron Ward, formerly of the Washington State Cougars. That’s the choice Draft Wire’s Curt Popejoy made for the Saints, who slotted in at No. 11 using the latest projected standings.

Ward’s name has been connected to the Saints for a few years now. He was linked to New Orleans in a midseason mock draft back in 2022, though he ultimately stayed in school. Wazzu went 5-7 last year, and Ward...

New Orleans Saints getting in gear for next season

NEW ORLEANS — The Saints wrap up organized team activities this week and most veterans have attended the voluntary workouts. Some vets are missing, like running back Alvin Kamara and cornerback Marshon Lattimore, but Dennis Allen said he expects full attendance for the three-day mandatory minicamp starting next week.

Allen said wide receiver Chris Olave wore a red non-contact jersey during team drills because he tweaked his shoulder in the weight room. He still made plays, including a deep reception in a drill we weren't allowed to shoot.

Olave is the clear cut No. 1 wideout this year...
