Underhill: Not acquiring another pressure player might have been as risky for Saints as trading up to draft one

By Nick Underhill

The Saints took a risk in trading up to draft Marcus Davenport.

This fact is already known. There is no need to rehash the stakes. And even though snap judgments already exist about the deal, and it will be prematurely graded again after the season, it is probably going to take a few years before accurate evaluations exist.

That doesn’t mean we’re done discussing it. Not even close. One of the more interesting aspects of the trade came to light when ESPN's Mike Triplett pointed out that a deal like this has never happened before. It was the third time in the past 15 years that a team packaged two first-round picks to select a non-quarterback (the other two were receivers), and the first time a team dealt two first rounders to acquire a pick outside of the top 12 (the Saints moved up from 27 to 14 in exchange for next year's first-round pick and a fifth-rounder).

That doesn’t mean any deal for a non-quarterback who isn't Julio Jones is misguided. The Saints would have been better off making the same deal to move up from 27 to 14 in 2007 to get cornerback Darrelle Revis, which would have cost them Robert Meachem and whomever they would have picked in 2008 instead of trading up for Sedrick Ellis (assuming they still got guard Carl Nicks in the fifth). And no one would be questioning a team for making a similar trade to select J.J. Watt in 2011.

The New Orleans Saints rolled out their 2024 NFL schedule with an all star cast. The Saints kept it local with a couple of high-profile cameos. The premise was the Saints were looking for a social media intern to craft their schedule reveal video.

Current Saints players Alvin Kamara and Derek Carr interviewed for the position and so did Saints legend Drew Brees. Brees delivered arguably the standout quote of the entire interview. When asked about his qualifications, the legend says, “I’m literally Drew Brees.” Simple but effective. The video also tapped into local roots with cameos with...

Main Departures

Although the Giants made strides to improve in some areas, they also got worse in others. The notable additions of Malik Nabers and Brian Burns headline these moves, but the losses of Saquon Barkley and Xavier Mckinney overshadow them. Going into the offseason, one of the main questions was whether the Giants could change quarterback. The result was Drew Lock...

There’s a lot riding on the first month of the New Orleans Saints’ 2024 season. Fast starts are always important, but it’s especially vital that Dennis Allen and Derek Carr prove their doubters wrong in September. With the NFL schedule releasing this week, the Saints found themselves favored by sportsbooks in just one of their first five games.

It isn’t going to be easy. After kicking off the season against the Carolina Panthers in New Orleans (where the Saints are favored by 4.5 points) they’ll go on the road for three of their next four games. And all but one of those matchups pits them...

The NFL schedule released Wednesday evening and revealed when the New Orleans Saints will play their opponents. The Saints have the easiest schedule in the NFL, but they aren’t alone. Solely based off the opponent’s record last year, New Orleans and the Atlanta Falcons have the easiest schedule in the NFL. The NFC South as a whole has the easiest schedule in the league

But the Saints found themselves in this position last year and still weren’t successful. Strength of schedule will never outweigh strength of team. The Saints will have to improve to take advantage of this opportunity...
