Can Ryan succeed in New Orleans?
Heath Evans said he likes the way Rob Ryan will fit with the New Orleans Saints because he believes coach Sean Payton gets the best out of his coaches and his players.
Brian Baldinger added that he thinks Ryan could be a good fit, if he doesn't try to do too much so they don't end up beating themselves.
Potential difference makers
Baldinger and Evans debated which old face in a new place will make the bigger impact.
Darrelle Revis versus Ed Reed: Baldinger chose Revis while Evans went with Reed.
Steven Jackson versus Reggie Bush: Evans chose Steven while Baldinger picked Bush.

Saints radio analyst Hokie Gajan taking on debilitating aches, pains like he did would-be tacklers: head on

Grand Isle - If he weren't in such pain, Hokie Gajan would have a field day describing his physical condition. You can almost hear the colorful New Orleans Saints radio analyst cracking wise in his trademark self-deprecating style.
"I'm walking around like a drunk pelican on a swinging bridge."
"I'm about as comfortable as a mudbug in a worm hole."
But there's nothing funny about Gajan's health problems. A debilitating case of arthritic gout and the physical fallout from an injury-riddled seven-year NFL career has extracted a toll on the former LSU and Saints running back.

Following the restructuring of strong safety Roman Harper's contract, the New Orleans Saints are now $5.1 million under the NFL's salary cap.
The Saints were just $1.6 million below the salary cap before Harper restructured his deal, but the team was able to save $3.44 million against this season's cap.
Harper is now set to count $3.66 million against the cap, down from $7.1 million. The extra cap space means the Saints now have the 17th most available cap space, according to figures from the NFL Players Association.

Full Story – Rant Sports.Com
The New Orleans Saints were in the market for a proven backup quarterback this offseason, and after it seemed he’d sign elsewhere, they inked eight-year veteran Seneca Wallace. After basically a year out of football, Wallace decided he still had a passion for the game, and fielded calls from several teams. Ultimately, he wanted to join a stable organization, with a clear-cut starting QB.
“It was just being with a healthy organization. Being in Cleveland last, not bashing them, but it was just different. But here with Mickey Loomis, the owner Mr. Benson, Coach Payton, they’ve got a good thing going on here and this late in my career that’s what I’m looking for, somewhere it’s a healthy organization, good people and good players.”

Twenty members of the New Orleans Saints were hosted by the Touchdown Club of New Orleans for the annual “Superboil” rookie crawfish dinner at the Harahan Lions Club. The players were joined by Head Coach Sean Payton, who all took their time mingling with passionate fans and signing autographs.
The newest members of the Black and Gold got their introduction to New Orleans cuisine as they were greeted with large portions of crawfish and all of the standard accompaniments. Fans gathered around each player, carefully instructing most of the rookies on how exactly to eat the Louisiana staple.
Though some players, including former Tulane quarterback Ryan Griffin, came into the event with plenty of experience.

Rob Ryan walked slowly Thursday afternoon until he reached the middle of a cluster of reporters, eager to hear his first comments since being named Saints defensive coordinator in February.
Once there, the man known as much for his personality as his passion for defensive schemes extended his first gag.
"No questions," Ryan said before taking a step away from about three dozen microphones. Just as fast, he turned around, smiling and showcasing perhaps the best coach curls in the NFL, earning laughs. Ryan then glanced at several television cameras and newspaper reporters surrounding him in a semi-circle.

The New Orleans Saints have spoken all offseason about appreciating having things back to "normal" for the first time since 2009. But one thing has changed with the organization: Coach Sean Payton looks like he is ready to play.
"Obviously if you see him, he's cut. He's ripped up now, man," cornerback Jabari Greer told The Times-Picayune.
"He's more swollen," said safety Roman Harper, who agreed to a contract extension that guarantees him $4 million in 2013. "He looks like he is in very good shape."

Drew Brees assuming more of a teaching role with young New Orleans Saints WR group

Full Story – Nola.Com
Maintaining a cohesive wide receiver corps like the New Orleans Saints have enjoyed the last seven years isn't the norm in the NFL. So Drew Brees has lived a pretty charmed life with many of his pass catchers knowing what he is thinking on a particular play and vice versa.
The stability on the roster has dwindled a bit the past two offseasons with the Saints moving on without Robert Meachem and Devery Henderson. It leaves Brees with Marques Colston and Lance Moore, two of the team's most prolific and reliable receivers in recent history.
Yet it also leaves Brees becoming more of a teacher of the offense than he's been used to in the last few years. And with some receivers, Brees essentially will be starting from scratch this offseason.

Saint123: Brown gets hurt so much, do you think its because he's out of shape.
could it be he dose not take care of his body like he should... I've not seen a person with the amount of problems this guy has in the NFL or you never hear about it.... is this normal
Mike Triplett, NOLA.com: I highly doubt that. This is his career, and he and the Saints are heavily invested in getting him in the best possible shape. ... But all bodies are built differently, and this is obviously a legitimate issue for him.
SP7984: Well since everyone keeps talking about the LT position and assume Armstead could start there by years end. What are the chances Armstead flat out beats Streif for the job who struggled badly and was pretty terrible last year?
Mike Triplett: That's possible too. Maybe Smith or Brown at RT even. ... But I think Strief gets pretty underrated by the fan base. Up until last year he had been very solid. And injuries were a big part of his struggles last year. I'm gonna bet on him to win the RT job. But obviously he could get beat out if others looks better this summer.

Rob Ryan, New Orleans Saints defense have same chip on their shoulders and plan to 'do something about it'

It's hard to tell who seems more energized by the New Orleans Saints' decision to hire Rob Ryan as defensive coordinator. The players, who say they're returning to the style that fit them best from 2009-2011. Or Ryan, who said Thursday that he hasn't enjoyed a situation more since he worked for Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots early in his career.
"It's awesome. I got lucky. I came out here, and I'm fortunate to be with a great program like the Saints led by Sean Payton," said Ryan, who met briefly with the New Orleans media Thursday for the first time since he was hired in February. "I just feel like a sense of urgency. I can't wait to give everything I have to this organization."
Obviously, expectations should be tempered when it comes to this new marriage between Ryan and the Saints' defense.

For first time since '09, Saints greeted no off-field distractions in offseason

Full Story – WWLTV.Com
The last time the Saints entered organized team activities with only football to talk about the team was coming off an 8-8 season.
In other words, for the first time in four years, members of the Saints aren’t talking about the Super Bowl, aren’t talking about the lockout, aren’t talking about bounties and aren’t talking about contract holdouts.
“Yeah, for awhile we did,” quarterback Drew Brees said when asked if he had forgotten what normal felt like. “Literally it has been four years since we’ve had a normal offseason. We’ve been looking forward to this for awhile.”
The parallels are remarkable to that 2009 offseason.

New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper plans to help with Kenny Vaccaro's adjustment to the NFL

Full Story – Nola.Com
Roman Harper knows very well what it meant when the New Orleans Saints took Texas safety Kenny Vaccaro in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. The 22-year-old Vaccaro could be Harper's replacement, whether it be in the future, or even this season.
That's not going to stop Harper from taking on the role Darren Sharper once took with him. Harper is one of the most tenured players on the team now, having arrived with Zach Strief, Drew Brees, Jahri Evans and Marques Colston in 2006.
Only Lance Moore and Will Smith have been on the roster longer.

New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper signs 'renegotiated' contract, league source confirms

Full Story – Nola.Com
New Orleans Saints safety Roman Harper was a late arrival at Thursday's Organized Team Activity session, and we might know why now. According to NFL.com's transaction page, Harper signed a renegotiated contract Thursday. A league source has also confirmed Harper has signed a renegotiated deal.
Harper was set to make $5.25 million in base salary this season while holding a $7.1 million cap number. Already $2.6 million of Harper's base salary is guaranteed this season as the contract stipulation was triggered on the third day of the league year in March. Before the restructured deal, Harper was slated to make a $6 million base in 2014 with a $7.9 million cap figure next season.
Any contract alterations for Harper would probably be more helpful for the 2014 season as any major spending in free agency and with their draft picks is long over. The Saints will carry nearly the league's highest cap cost with $145.5 million committed for 2014.

Full Story – New Orleans Saints.Com
Opening Statement: This is our third OTA this week in the first week of them. We are still in kind of a lifting and meeting mode also, so these guys are splitting up, half going into the weight room, half going into meetings and we switch that around.
What is the status of Charles Brown?
We’re working through a little offseason injury from weightlifting, nothing significant. We’ll keep monitoring it. He received some work in the walkthroughs. We’re just being patient with it.
How much this week is guys adjusting as opposed to you guys evaluating, especially on defense?
This is our first go at it this week. There was a lot of learning going on and we’re getting installation done in three phases. We’re installing offense and defense and the same in the kicking game. There are a lot of new faces and a lot of learning. I think that’s the primary purpose here, making sure that number one we’re doing a good job in the weight room and we’re getting ready for training camp. Number two, from a mental aspect, we’re getting ready for the installations and guys are getting the first run of it here and we’ll repeat it when we get to training camp. It’s the same type of format in regards to teaching.

Rob Ryan: "Everybody is Competing on Defense"

Full Story – New Orleans Saints.Com
How is it working with Sean Payton on the field?
It’s awesome. I got lucky. I came out here and I’m fortunate enough to be with a great program like the Saints led by Sean Payton. I haven’t felt this way since I was in New England with Bill Belichick, so I’m working for the best and hope to be a small part of our success.
Can you explain to me about how you haven’t felt this way since you were with Bill Belichick?
I just feel like (there is) a sense of urgency. I can’t wait to give everything I have to this organization. I know everybody is on the same path. The big sign that used to be up there saying ‘Do Your Job,’ I have heard those words before, and I plan on doing it. I have two Super Bowl rings, won one of them out of here in sweet live New Orleans. This is a great organization, and that’s where I want to be.

Romeus, 6-5, 267, was originally selected by the Saints as a seventh round draft pick (226th overall) in 2011 from Pittsburgh, where he was a four-year letterman. Romeus played in 40 games with 28 starts for the Panthers and finished his college career with 142 tackles, 19.5 sacks, 38.5 stops for losses, five forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, one interception, 12 passes defensed and four blocked kicks. Mike Detillier's Top 32 Prospects for the 2014 NFL Draft
Posted On 05-19-2013
Mike Detillier's Top 32 Prospects for the 2014 NFL Draft
1. Jadeveon Clowney- Defensive End South Carolina
My highest ranked defensive end prospect since Bruce Smith came out of Virginia Tech in 1985. Clowney's defensive playmaking skills are off the charts and the 6-5 ½, 270 pounder has great edge speed and closing skills to the ballcarrier. Despite constant double-team blocking he recorded 54 tackles, 23 ½ tackles for losses, 3 forced fumbles and 13 quarterback sacks in 2012.
2. Teddy Bridgewater- Quarterback Louisville
Bridgewater is a tremendous overall athlete who has excellent size, a strong arm and he has 1st rate accuracy skills in the pocket. His ability to move around outside the pocket is outstanding and he buys extra time for his receivers to get open downfield. The 6-3, 220-pounder completed 66.9% of his passes in 2012, he threw for 5,847 yards and 41 touchdowns.
3. Tajh Boyd-Quarterback Clemson
Boyd reminds me in so many ways of former Tennessee Titans QB Steve McNair. The Clemson standout passer is one tough dude hanging in the pocket until the last second to make a throw, he throws accurately from the pocket, he has excellent mobility skills and he is dangerous running with the ball. He completed 67.2% of his passes in 2012. Boyd passed for 3,896 yards and 36 touchdowns as a junior. He would have been the first QB off the 2013 NFL draft board, had he decided to come out early.
4. Marqise Lee- Wide Receiver USC
The 2012 Fred Biletnikoff Award winner caught 118 passes for 1,721 yards and 14 scores for the Trojans. The 6-0, 200 pound Lee has very sure hands, great foot speed and explosive openfield moves. Lee is not only a gold chip "stretch" receiver, but he also excels in the return game averaging 28.5 yards per runback on kickoff returns.
5. Jake Matthews-Offensive Tackle Texas A&M
Jake has some strong football genes in him being the son of former Houston Oilers NFL Hall of Fame offensive lineman Bruce Matthews. The 6-5, 305 pounder is a very good technician, he is a strong in-line run blocker and a very good pass protector. Has started for the Aggies since...

What to expect with the move to the 3-4: Personnel and Scheme

What to expect with the move to the 3-4: Personnel and Scheme
by TCUDan
I have held off on giving my assessment of our move to the 3-4 until now because there simply was not enough information out there. And there still may not be. But before now, everything was speculation--who would be playing where, who would be cut, 2 gap vs. 1 gap, etc. Now that there has been a little more information put out there, directly from the coaches, I'm going to extrapolate and break down my vision of what this means for the team.
The Base Scheme
Under Rob Ryan, the Saints are moving to a 3-4 defense, as we all know. Ryan comes from the same coaching tree as GW, so the concepts are going to be quite familiar to the players. The difference is going to start with base alignment and go from there.
There's been a lot of speculation on the forum about whether we're going to run a 2-gap or 1-gap 3-4. What's the difference? Simply put, it's what you're asking your defensive line to do. In a 2-gap scheme, you're asking your DL to ANCHOR. To hold their ground, create push, and force a double team to hold long enough for the LB’s to stay clean and move to the action. It's called "2-gap" because they are playing 2 gaps. Their POA is the chest of the OL in front of them... they read and react to the gaps on either side of them.
1-gap, you're asking your linemen to penetrate and disrupt. A lot has been made over how JJ Watt and Justin Smith before him have revolutionized the 3-4 DE position. Well, that's because they're being asked to play like 4-3 lineman. They're being asked to beat the guy in front of them, shoot gaps and make plays... not to just eat up space so everyone else can get in on the action.
We will be 1-gapping. How do I know this? Because Payton said specifically that we will be using 4-3 concepts like Over and Under fronts. This is the best course of action, as it will give our young, talented DE's... Cam Jordan, in particular... a chance to make plays like Watt and Smith.
The Sub-packages
Like GW before him, Rob Ryan makes his living off his sub-packages. Ryan, in particular, gets really creative with his alignment on passing downs and brings guys from everywhere to get the QB. Whereas the advantage of the 3-4 vs. the 4-3 is that...
