By Guerry Smith - Associated Press

METAIRIE, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints filled a pressing need with their first-round pick in the NFL draft.

Then they traded up in the second round to get a player they targeted at a position of relative strength.

In selecting Oregon State offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga No, 14 overall, coach Dennis Allen felt the Saints took a logical approach.

“There’s really not any sense screwing around,” he said. “You’ve got the guy you like. It’s a position of need. Let’s don’t overthink this. Let’s take the player.”

Fuaga played right tackle at Oregon State, but with New Orleans having potential openings at both tackle spots, he said he would be comfortable on either side. Trevor Penning, the second of two 2022 first-round picks, lost his starting role at left tackle early last season. His replacement, Andrus Peat, is an unsigned free agent. Starting right tackle Ryan Ramczyk had offseason surgery to address a chronic knee issue and faces an uncertain future.

Fuaga was the fourth of seven offensive tackles picked in the first round in a draft heavy on highly rated tackles.

“It was fortunate for us,” Allen said. “It’s not too often that the depth of the draft at the position of need marry up, but this happened to be a year that it married up for us.” ...

New Orleans Saints fans have keyed in on some of their team’s trends in scouting college players, and there’s one metric in particular that gets discussed leading up to the NFL draft: Relative Athletic Scores.

Developed by NFL analyst Kent Lee Platte, RAS is a composite score that inputs standard testing results from the NFL Scouting Combine and college pro days, then digests that information into a single number on a 10-point scale for ease of use. It’s valuable because there are thousands of players at every position group to compare against current prospects.

To be clear, the New...

The New Orleans Saints invited Furman running back Dominic Roberto to their upcoming rookie minicamp, he announced on Twitter. He’ll have a great opportunity to compete with other free agents and make his case for a spot on the team’s 90-man roster ahead of training camp.

Roberto was productive in his five-year career at Furman, recording 466 carries for 2,514 rushing yards with 28 touchdowns and just one fumble. He also blocked often in pass protection but wasn’t asked to catch many passes. It’s possible the Saints envision Roberto as a fullback. He weighed in at 5-foot-10.5 and 235...

He played in 28 games with the Tigers at both the guard and tackle positions, with 11 starts. Wire mostly played at left tackle but has also taken snaps at right tackle (139), right guard (133), and left guard (11)

We at the Saints Wire had the amazing opportunity to speak with wide receiver Bub Means the New Orleans Saints’ fifth-round pick, the morning after he was selected in the 2024 NFL draft. Means played at a couple of different colleges before moving up to the pros, so he’s had opportunities to meet many people around the football landscape.

This allowed us to get an inside look into one of the newest members of the team and talk to him about his connections to Louisiana and current Saints players, as well as some of the newest draft picks for the team. So without further ado, let’s get right into the interview:

The New Orleans Saints have invited former Michigan State linebacker Aaron Brule for a tryout at their rookie minicamp next month.

The 6-1, 220 lb. linebacker is from New Orleans, LA and attended Archbishop Rummel High School, where he was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN. He played four years at Mississippi State before transferring to Michigan State, where he had 64 tackles (35 solo, 29 assists) and 5 sacks in 2023 and was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection and named to Reese’s Senior Bowl Preseason Watch List.

40 of the Saints' 43 players on offense are under age 30

It’s no secret that younger athletes have an edge on older ones. Fresh legs and untapped potential have a lot to offer. And the New Orleans Saints have often been criticized for fielding a roster that skews closer to the older side in recent years, relying hard on so many veteran players on the wrong side of 30.

So it’s worth taking note when these trends reverse themselves. Right now, after drafting seven rookies and signing 15 more undrafted free agents, the Saints have 43 players on offense, 40 on defense, with a few specialists rounding out their roster to 87 (of the 90 offseason...

Touchdown Wire grades the Saints' rookie class best in the NFC South

It’s been quite some time since thee New Orleans Saints had an NFL draft class as universally approved as their 2024 haul, but rave reviews keep pouring in.

Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar handed out draft grades for all 32 teams once the final pick came in on Saturday night. And it’s the New Orleans Saints sitting on top of the NFC South, with an A-minus. Here’s why Farrar is so high on their selections:

We’re guessing the slight trade up to get McKinstry (swapping two late-round picks to move up four slots in Round 2) kept the Saints from getting a clean A or A-plus. But as for the rest...

It’s early, but it’s safe to say former Colorado State tight end Dallin Holker passes the eye test. The New Orleans Saints acted quickly to sign him as a rookie free agent after he wasn’t picked in the 2024 draft. And when you first pull up Holker’s highlight reel, the first thing that comes to mind is a question: Why wasn’t he drafted? His story helps explain why NFL teams were cool on him.

Holker was a quiet part of BYU’s offense to start his college career, having missed the 2019 and 2020 seasons to serve his two-year religious mission inn Chile. After returning to find a bit part...

Ranking Saints' greatest remaining team needs after 2024 draft

The New Orleans Saints were busy during and after the 2024 NFL draft, but they couldn’t check off every item on their to-do list. At least they were able to put out the biggest fires. But there’s more work to be done before they’ll be ready for training camp in July, much less the start of the season in September.

But where to start? More reinforcements for the offensive line? Or do they need more weapons for Derek Carr and Klint Kubiak? What about Dennis Allen’s defense, which currently has six fewer players on the roster than the offense (and almost twice as many veterans over 30)?

We’ve done our best to highlight each vulnerability and identify possible solutions. Here are the Saints’ top remaining team needs with the NFL draft in rearview:

NFL teams tell you how they value players by their actions, and most importantly how they spend their money. With the 2024 NFL draft behind us the New Orleans Saints entered a fierce bidding war with other teams for the rookies whose names were not called during the draft. And one of their first pickups was a costly one: Idaho Vandals wide receiver/return man Jermaine Jackson.

Jackson is listed at 5-foot-7 and 170 pounds so he’s cut from the same cloth as other Saints returns specialists like Rashid Shaheed and Deonte Harty. While he received just a $10,000 signing bonus to come to New...

Updated New Orleans Saints depth chart after the 2024 draft

It was a busy weekend for the New Orleans Saints, who picked seven rookies and signed 15 more as undrafted free agents. That’s a ton of young talent getting injected to the roster, and it’s going to change the shape of the depth chart one way or another (well, really in several different ways). Some positions suddenly look deeper when just a few days ago they seemed vulnerable. Others that may have been perceived as a strength are now a little too crowded.

So how do things stand now? Which positions were most heavily impacted? Where do they still need to make more additions? Here’s our take on the Saints’ updated roster after the 2024 draft. For the most part all rookies are starting out at the bottom of the depth chart, but we’re expecting some big movers in the weeks and months ahead.

Take a bow, Mickey Loomis. And Jeff Ireland. You too, Dave Ziegler and Randy Mueller — the four different general managers (past and present) who crowded into the New Orleans Saints’ war room for the 2024 NFL draft.

You don’t see this too often. Pro Football Focus draft analyst Trevor Sikkema awarded the Saints with an elusive A-plus grade for their haul in the 2024 draft. Not just for getting the most out of their early-round picks in right tackle Taliese Fuaga and cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry, but for getting great value later on with picks like quarterback Spencer Rattler and...
