Also check youtube, there are hundreds of videos showing things like proper technique for holding the sticks to explaining basic rhythms.
Learn the rudiments (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudiment) and what you learn about counting rhythm from youtube and you basically can play the groves for about 90% of the popular songs you hear.
I'm not a drummer, I just sat through the lessons that my 11 year old took this summer
No. Do not do this. The money for lessons is SO worth it. If you stick with it, it will be one of your best investments ever. Trust me, I've drummed for 7 years.

While this may be great advice (I have met plenty of musicians that are just musically gifted), this doesn't apply to all. For example, I am a mostly self taught drummer at a performance level. I've tried bass, piano, guitar and even a little trombone and I can't get beyond the basics. I've played with guys that can play any instrument at a professional level. Congrats to you on your musical talents.
Thanks, my advice was to just do it. He may need the lessons, but he can't have them. So just start hitting S&*^ and perhaps it'll stick.

Join the school band. That way you are out of the house (mainly) doing your rudes and such. Also, I have the gut feeling that she doesn't wanna hear all that dang banging going on in the house. Show her this.
I can play them while my gf sleeps in the next room and she can't hear them at all. They sound GREAT by the way.
I personally am having a hard time believing that, in New Orleans, there isn't somebody on your block who'll give lessons. Check local bulletin boards. Other than that, the HS band idea is actually sound advice.
Congrats man! Your cymbals seem a bit... far away. Maybe angle your toms in a little bit, scrunch 'em together, and get your cymbals in a little tighter.

Gotta say I'm disappointed, man. I mean the drums look fine, and all, (I know jack about drums, btw) but what I notice is that I don't see a single Fleur De Lis anywhere in the picture. It is said, "If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem". You ain't a cowgirls fan, are ya? Just kiddin', man. Happy drummin'.

Awesome. Now get to bashin dem der drums. Practices your rudiments all the time because it will certainly pay off in the long run. I get too impatient with rudes and it shows in my playing. I can keep time and all, but my fills need work because I am not very good at rudes.
Looks like a nice starter set, but please get someone to set them up properly for ya.....and I would recommend putting a rug under them, so they don't walk away....Looks like your kick drum supports are backwards....They should be facing forward....

You need lessons to play the drums? Come on. I know people that picked that up in less then a day.

Some of them only lose an arm.
OP, did you fall on the ground crying and beating your fist into the carpet? My kids seem to think that'll work for them. Hasn't yet, but that doesn't stop them from trying.

ooops...3 pm...time for a refill of water and a tablespoon of peanut butter.
I know everything is far apart, I had taken the toms off to adjust the mounting(which sucks) when I thought I'd snap a picture, so I rushed and put everything the way it is in the picture.

No, I think she just stopped caring. Took long enough.
