Despite being 7-0, Saints have concerns
11/04/09
Associated Press

Quote:
METAIRIE, La. (AP)—Drew Brees sounds like a man who’s embarrassed, and not because of all the compliments he’s getting over the New Orleans Saints’ perfect record through seven games.

The Saints’ past two victories have been riddled with errors, starting with eight turnovers, six of which were committed by the quarterback with four interceptions and a pair of fumbles.

“You look at it—four turnovers against Miami, four again against Atlanta — and those were good football teams we played and we were able to overcome them because of great defensive play and making some big plays offensively when we had to,” Brees said. “But the fact of the matter is: That stuff gets you beat.

At some point it catches up to you and we need to fix it. It’s sloppy football and it’s not what we preach around here. It’s not what we teach. It’s not how we work. So it’s a bad reflection on us and we don’t like that.”

Apparently, this 7-0 start, which matches the 1991 Saints for the best start in the franchise’s 43-year history, hasn’t gone to the heads of these Saints...

Embarassed over the Saints' play?

Drew Brees should say that to my face. Not on the internet. See what happens.

8 turnovers in the past two games are unacceptable.

Saints protection is getting worst each game. Have this team been exposed. It seems that teams will just start sending more players that they can block. Brees is taking a lot of hits now. He is on pace to get sack 25 times this year. They have to do better.

25/33 300+ yards and a solid 140 yd night on the ground...the OL did alright after some adjustments. The Falcons D played a really motivated game to knock us off our high horse and hang in the division. Im not too worried.

It's great that Drew recognizes that plays like that get you beat, even when you win. It seem we only ever heard that from previous players/coaches when it actually DID get us beat.

Then again, with the exception of maybe the Dome Patrol, we didn't have a defense that could keep us in the game after that many turnovers.

I would agree with Drew, the play the last two weeks has been embarrassing. We won both weeks because this team is just THAT good, but playing that kind of game won't work against ATL at home or against NE, and certainly won't work in the playoffs.

I hope that this team is not looking at the 7-0 record but looking instead at the problems and keeping humble.

We do need to clean up the turnovers. A losing turnover ratio is the most rock solid stat in the NFL when it comes to predicting wins and losses. The Saints are 7-0 b/c in their first 5 games they won the turnover battle big time and in their last two they at least managed to create multiple turnovers. Atlanta would not have even been close in that game if we had not turned the ball over.

Valid concern -- the fact that we still came up in the win column is impressive -- but stats like that tend to get you a 1 and out playoff scenario
