My Copperhead and Cottonmouth/Water Moccasin survival guide

I dunno Ive never seen either one in the wild. You are on your own. Try not to get bit though. Thats always good advice.

Bonus: Gila Monster Survival guide. If you see a Gila monster for goodness sake leave him alone. He's slow and stupid and wont go where you are and will stay well away from you. Even if you were a big enough pest to where he just had to bite you he would need about fifteen minutes of time to gnaw enough poison into you to where you got what you had coming. If you somehow manage to make a Gila Monster bite you despite his best efforts to avoid you then just pry him off of your hand and let him slowly lumber safely away like he wanted to do from the very start. Then rinse the blood and Gila monster spit off your hand. Maybe put some neosporin and a bandage on it. Lesson learned. Really.

we startled the crap out of each other when I realized I was standing a foot from him in some tall grass as I was unloading the car for a cub scout trip yesterday near the Potomac here in Maryland. Milk snake, maybe?

There are no native coral snakes in Maryland, but a few common-to-uncommon milk snakes. Besides, red on black: non-venomous milksnake. Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum, probably.

yeah, I knew it wasn't a coral snake. the colors are not bands that go all the way around. I was thinking it looked somewhat like a copperhead, but knew it wasn't by its small head.
