Where are the big plays in the passing game?

I was looking at the Stats on NFL.com and Brees was 16th in the NFL with pass plays of 20 yards or more with 10. Despite the fact he was 2nd in the NFL with 118 completions.

Rivers lead the NFL with 24 pass plays of 20 yards and Orton is 2nd with 22.

Everybody is saying that the defence is playing deeper, preventing the big play, but last time I checked in 07 teams played New England that way and but they didn't care and attacked anyway and rewrote the NFL record book. The one time in the Carolina game the Saints throw down field they got a 46 yard pass interference call.

With big guys like Colston,Meachem and even Jimmy Graham throw it up and let them use there size.

It just hasn't been on this year. I would point to this as one of the main reasons for our offensive 'struggles' if you can call them that. The defenses have learned from last year. They are sacrificing those medium range completions (evidenced by how much we have seen of Shockey this year) to cut out the deep ball as best they can and they are doing it early.

The realisation is that we are so good that last year we could have a couple of huge passes in the first half and be out of sight, however cutting that out is making us vary things a lot more and, coupled with the poor running game, is making our O look worse than it really is and keeping games a lot closer than we would like. Compare it to a heavyweight fight, where last year our opponent was taking a few risks and throwing a few jabs which we exploited, this year they are barely dropping their arms and there is little we can do about it apart from wait and trust Brees to find the gaps which eventually will appear to hit that killer blow.

We know how Payton offenses are. You can think you have him figured out and then he will run a gameplan of plays the complete opposite to what you expect and all of a sudden we are out of our slump. We have seen this before and I fully expect we see it again in Arizona or Tampa against two pretty poor defenses ranked 29th and 20th respectively.

Long passes have sailed , leading to interceptions, receivers dropping the ball. Saw the dropped balls are killing us. They just look rusty and out of sinc . As i have said before , i'm not extremely worried, because they will find their groove, but they better find it fast!
I do look for a better game today! Ivory and Betts , will keep the defense respecting the running game, and open things up for a spread it around Brees and Co. !

Peronally, I think Brees is going to be a little off step until his baby is born. That has to be a huge distraction.

Teams really aren't allowing us to have the deep stuff... they are playing as soft coverage as they possibly can... as they try to make us march on long drives by giving us all the underneath stuff... rather than gamble with us getting it all in 1 shot. and it's working because our guys have been coughing up the football before we can finish drives.

Mostly this, plus a few drops and a few off target throws.

Like someone else said, teams aren't letting us go deep. They're keeping everything in front of them and we're basically dinking and dunking. We've got a few shots down the field, but they just haven't fallen complete. Whether it's slightly overthrown, underthrown, they're just off.

like everyone's said, the big play has been there. if Drew drops the ball in front of Devery instead of underthrowing it, the flea flicker goes for 6. if Devery catches the long ball on the sideline, it goes for six. Meachem in the back of the endzone... Meachem getting interfered with at the goal line.... the big play has been there.

They are right here.

All we need to do is get him the ball a little more.

Every team learned from the Super Bowl, the long ball was cut off. That's how we killed the Colt's, on the short and mid range stuff....

Th safeties are playing max protect, thereby making us go underneath all the way down the field. Once we start running the ball with vigor, they will have to bring the safeties in. Then we'll see some long ball.

Until the Saints can prove different I think every team is going to play them to stop the deep ball and make the Saints run and take the short stuff. Increases the number of plays and increases the likelihood that a fumble or critical drop/miss will occur. The team has moved the ball well when they've really needed to but is suffering in the Red Zone.
